Content Marketing Lessons from Vince Vaughn’s The Internship

In The Internship, Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play the type of slacker, manchild-types you’ve seen in dozens of films like Wedding Crashers, Old School, Hall Pass, etc. The twist this time around is that, despite being in their 40s and decidedly un-techy, the guys land internships at Google. Hilarity, presumably, ensues.

It might not have the most original or intriguing plot ever but, as a marketer, what interests me about The Internship is the fact that it’s an absolute content marketing home run for Google.

A New York Times movie critic called The Internship a “two-hour commercial for GoogleWorld masquerading as an inspirational buddy comedy.” She goes on to say that the film depicts Google’s Silicon Valley HQ as nothing short of a magical place to work filled with brilliant people doing important work.

Can you imagine if Hollywood made a movie about how great your company is? Make that happen and you can go ahead and claim your spot in the Marketing Hall of Fame.

Of course, everybody already knows who Google is. The rest of us have to find our way into the conversation and, really, that’s what content marketing is all about.

Real World Advice from a Really Silly Movie

When it comes to creating content, you need to be ready to draw inspiration from anywhere and everywhere. And, if your content can relate to trending topics being discussed on social media and the blogosphere – like, say, a popular movie about a Tech giant – all the better.

On the practical side, here are a few ideas how you can leverage the buzz surrounding The Internship to produce your own attention-grabbing content:

  • Write a blog post detailing your own great program, offering or solution.
  • Create a video all about life at your office. Showcase your employee perks and give the world a peak behind the curtain at the characters who make up your company.
  • Google is renowned for its company culture and philosophy. Write a blog post explaining how your company’s beliefs align or clash with Google’s.
  •  Think The Internship gives an unrealistic depiction of life at a tech company? Write a post giving your readers the real scoop.
