Say what you will, but Facebook still reigns as one of the world’s top social networks. According to the latest study by GlobalWebIndex.com, Facebook boasts a nearly 50 percent utilization rate by active Internet users worldwide. Facebook usage is also highest in North America with a 59 percent utilization rate among active users. Meanwhile, Google+ only achieves 15 percent and Twitter 25 percent.
Facebook is still the social network to beat. If your company isn’t on Facebook, then the first step is to get on it. If you already are on Facebook, then here are three easy ways you can instantly engage more customers using your company’s page.
1. Upload More Photos – and Make Them Awesome
People usually like to peruse someone’s photos rather than read their bio. In fact, research from the aforementioned study shows that photo uploading is the most popular activity on Facebook. Despite rising platforms like Pinterest and Instagram (which Facebook acquired), Facebook still secures a top spot as the place for people to put their photos – be it from users’ desktops, smartphones or tablets – making it the perfect opportunity for your business to engage customers.
Share photos to reflect memorable moments, holidays, big-name events or to celebrate a landmark or goal your company has achieved (for example, celebrating your company’s anniversary or sharing a still shot from that Harlem Shake video you made a few months ago). Quickly post a photo reminding customers that it is the last day for them to receive free shipping. Or, share a photo with a reminder of your holiday shipping schedule. Participate in “Throwback Thursdays” (or #tbt) and get creative. Heck, share photos during the week just for the fun of it. 2. Ask More Questions – But Don’t Be Cheesy
We’ve all secretly cringed while on the other side of the screen at the horrible questions asked by companies on Facebook. For instance, “What’s YOUR favorite part of our holiday sale this year?” Companies should not be posting Facebook questions for the purpose of self-promotion. Not only is it generic and unoriginal, but your customers will be able to smell it a mile away.
Instead, try posting a survey-style question that is relatable and creative. For instance, ask your Facebook fans what gets them in the holiday spirit. Then give a variety of answers listed “A” through “E” and invite them to leave a comment sharing their choice and why. Or, ask a question that relates back to your company’s core competencies. For instance, if you’re the owner of a bakery, ask your followers what’s the best and worst dessert they’ve ever tasted at a holiday party. These types of questions strike the perfect balance between interesting and inclusive. That previously mentioned infographic also shows that questions tend to drive Facebook interaction up by 10 to 20 percent; however, only when the right questions are asked.
3. Give Your Customers an Inside Look – Show Them Who You Really Are
We are all curious by nature. What do you think the purpose of Facebook is anyways? You’re wondering what’s up with that old high school flame and you’re trying to discretely learn more about your sibling’s new boyfriend or girlfriend – you’re trying to learn more about people and things. So why not invite your customers to learn more about your company?
As mentioned in the first point, share photos that show a behind-the-scenes look at your company to boost brand credibility. Show a photo of that exclusive event you attended or share a snapshot of that time your entire team camped out on a cold winter’s night to increase homelessness awareness.
